El Acto de la Aviación Federal de 1958 (The Federal Aviation Act), creó su agencia bajo el nombre de Agencia Federal de Aviación (Federal Aviation Agency). Ellos adoptaron su nombre actual en 1967, cuando se convirtieron en parte del Departamento de Transporte. Sus responsabilidades principales incluyen:
* Regular la aviación civil para promover la seguridad.
* Promover y desarrollar la aeronáutica civil, incluyendo la nueva tecnología de la aviación.
* Desarrollar un sistema operativo de control de tráfico aéreo y de navegación, tanto para aeronaves civiles como  militares.
*  Investigar y desarrollar el Sistema Nacional de Espacio Aéreo y la Aeronáutica Civil.
* Desarrollar y llevar a cabo programas de control de ruido de las aeronaves y otros efectos ambientales de la aviación civil.
* Regular el transporte comercial espacial de los Estados Unidos.

The Federal Aviation Act of 1958 created the agency under the name Federal Aviation Agency. They adopted their present name in 1967 when they became a part of the Department of Transportation. Their major roles include:

* Encouraging and developing civil aeronautics, including new aviation technology
* Developing and operating a system of air traffic control and navigation for both civil and military aircraft

* Developing and carrying out programs to control aircraft noise and other environmental effects of civil aviation
* Regulating U.S. commercial space transportation
